Livin' the summer of '69 - English version
Nepal, a country located between India and China four times as big as the Netherlands. A country with many interesting places, sights, nature, people and a indescribable culture. People say Nepal is the roof of the world, with 10 of the highest mountains on earth. Nepal is a country with many positive but also negative sides. The poverty, political unrest and primitive infrastructure won't make life easy when living here. But the amazing culture, nature, friendly people and the amazing weather (from halfway march) do make this country magical and wonderful to live in, and certainly worth a visit once in your life. Nepal, a country that I did not think of when deciding on my placement on the first hand, but at this moment I cannot think of any other country which could give me so much new knowledge, so many new friends and such a great experience as Nepal.
Nepal is the country where the 'summer of ‘69' can be lived once again. The country where it does not matter who you are, where you are from and what you are doing. The country where people are still happy with the things they have. Nepal is the country where you need a lot of patience, and where it does not matter whether it happens today, or tomorrow. The country where you not expect to meet many Dutch people, but you meet them everywhere, the country where a bus ticket still costs 13 cent, and there are more taxis than there is demand. Nepal is the country of the Rhododendron, and the country where the marijuana plants grow just next to the roads. Nepal is the country where karma wins from criminality and religions go together as in no other country in the world. The country where there is a shortage of electricity which results in max. 15 hours of power a day. But once you live in this country, it all does not matter, it is what makes Nepal special and magical.
Unfortunately, Nepal is also a country where poverty is still a daily problem and a country where there can be a strike from one to the other day and literary the whole country is closed. Political unrest and disagreement are part of everyday life in Nepal, and the people are dissatisfied with the new government. At this moment the government is trying to agree on a constitution which they already failed to do two times before. On the 27th of May they were supposed to finish it but again this did not happen. This is why there were big strikes during the last weeks and normal life was not possible. Nepal is Nepal and the only possibility is learning how to deal with these aspects.
Right now my work in Nepal is done and it is time for me to move on. My next destination will be New Delhi, the capital of India. I am really curious what turns up during my trip! I have a double feeling about India since I heard many different stories but I certainly will make the best out of it. When you are so close to the Taj Mahal you just have to go there and see this amazing piece of art. My next story will be from India our Thailand, but I will keep you guys up to date!
My work here is done
Take care!
